See The Room That Ate Ms. Pac-Man and Three Other One-of-a-Kind Video Game Experiences Right Here

Wed, 07/31/2013 - 08:42 -- rprice

Proof that video games are art isn't just on the screen. Sometimes it can be right in front of you, in the form of an arcade classic that swallows a whole room or tricked-out gloves that let you throw a Street Fighter fireball. The video game art that viewers saw at the recent Babycastles Summit—along with a controversial hacked NES game that tackled racism and a Guitar Hero sequel that never happened— wasn't just manifested in button presses. It merged the physical and virtual worlds of play in a series of exhibits that sprang from the mind Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi.

The Talk Shop | Press

Mon, 05/13/2013 - 13:14 -- rprice

The Talk Shop charges nothing and will be open through April 13 at the West 37th Street space, which was brokered through Chashama, an organization that connects arts groups with underutilized real estate in the city. Passersby can see into the salon, and can watch Mr. Redleaf and his team of “shop talkers”—people including comedians, drag queens, authors and a life coach who help keep the conversations going—as they talk to whomever comes in. To make the Talk Shop inviting, Mr. Redleaf set up a beach umbrella and chairs, hung a string of lights and painted the walls lemon yellow.

Rockwell Group : Lab

Tue, 02/19/2013 - 10:37 -- rprice

As an interactive design team within a larger architecture firm, the LAB seeks to blur the line between the physical and virtual in all of Rockwell Group’s projects. The LAB’s process relies heavily on iterative prototypes that we build ourselves. Through making and experimenting with interactive experiences, and embedding that software and hardware into things and places, the LAB creates narratives and new design opportunities that provide deeper and more valuable experiences for visitors and inhabitants.

Why we need Open, Hackable Materials now – An Interview with Catarina Mota « Meedabyte

Wed, 09/05/2012 - 05:45 -- rprice

She is, no doubt, amongst the most eminent representatives of the Hacking movement. To me, it’s extremely impressive though how one of the leaders of this revolution is coming right from outside the technological world and actually has a communication sciences and film college background. When I asked her to tell me a brief recap of her experience of hacking, she gave a really insightful and detailed story.

Catarina’s first contacts with electronics and programming was at ITP-NYU in 1998:

Hilary Mason: From Tiny Links, Big Insights - Businessweek

Wed, 05/23/2012 - 10:40 -- rprice

The 33-year-old wrote a program to crawl the Web and download menus from New York eateries. It took her down a rabbit hole of restaurant exploration. She didn’t figure out the perfectly average spot, but she learned that there are 173 different burgers to order in the West Village—but 363 in the East Village, and at lower prices.
