Output Arts » I have a message for you...

Tue, 08/21/2012 - 10:13 -- rprice

Listening without speaking alludes to eavesdropping and the covert monitoring of communications. The audience can influence the clarity of the message by adjusting the controls on the machine, giving a physical side to the sense of searching and trying to hang on to the messages. However, the piece includes the deliberate design of interfering with the descrambling process to cause the gradual degradation of the audio so that the messages eventually become engulfed in machine noise before cutting off suddenly to silence.

What Data Visualization Can and Can't Tell Us About Pennsylvania's Voter ID Law | TechPresident

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 13:55 -- rprice

"It appears that Pennsylvania's new strict photo ID requirement may be in effect a racially discriminatory voting procedure," Tamara Manik-Perlman, Azavea's spacial data analyst, wrote in a recently published blog post.

But she admitted that the findings are limited in scope because the analysis is confined to the city of Philadelphia, the only geographic area for which Azavea has all the relevant datasets.

A factory for the emerging 'makers' - CNN.com

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 13:36 -- rprice

"In the U.S. and Europe, people are starting to realize that there's this opportunity to make again," Muren said. "I think in the rest of the world, they're kind of like 'Well, isn't it funny you all call this 'making.' We've been doing this forever. That's one of the things that's exciting to me is the meeting of those two places. "

At last Fall's PopTech conference in Camden, Maine, he talked up some of the products that have been created with the help of Humblefactory, and other creations from the "maker movement" including the aforementioned Egg-Bot.

McDaniel imagined the piece in giant format on the Urban ReThink wall and, in particular, the reaction it might trigger in his niece. Yet, upon seeing his first Photoshopped rendering, Spath quickly dismissed its authenticity. “It’s not real.”

Workshops teach programming with offline, playful approach (Wired UK)

Fri, 07/27/2012 - 13:22 -- rprice

The course is designed to help creative people visualise what's going on inside a computer by touching and physically moving items around. This helps to demystify computing and let people realise that "everything a computer does is either very dumb or a very smart implementation of what, as humans, we are able to do".

Participants are told to put their computers away -- the workshops feature no actual code, editor or screens. Instead, budding programmers are given pens, paper, tape, sweets, ping-pong balls, wooden boxes, cups and other common objects.

Spotlight on Central Florida: Summer Arts Camps | culturebuildsflorida

Fri, 07/27/2012 - 11:45 -- rprice

All of the large arts organizations in our area have summer camps. The Orlando Repertory Theatre alone has over 50 summer camp offering for students. The Orange County Regional History Center brings history alive with their artistic process. Students – ranging from 5 years of age through middle school – learn about ancient Egypt through maps, mummification and the painting of hieroglyphs. The Orlando Shakespeare Theater is teaching Shakespeare, make-up, history and costuming through an innovative “Zombie Shakespeare” camp. Crealdé, a local visual art center, has a finely tuned model.
