Orlando Weekly and the Orlando Fringe grew up together | Arts Stories & Interviews | Orlando Weekly

Tue, 12/29/2015 - 07:21 -- rprice

The Weekly was always supportive of the Fringe, but in the third year of the Fringe, I think I had heard that a conservative religious radio station had been warning its listeners about the Fringe, while the Weekly ran a headline "Fringe a forum for Religious Right" because of a production of an anti-abortion-leaning play. That was the best and the worst – to have ALL sides of our community offended, but to have all sides of our community OFFENDED.

In its 16 years Stardust Video & Coffee has become a vital cultural crossroads for Orlando | Drinking, Nightlife & Parties | Orlando Weekly

Tue, 12/29/2015 - 07:15 -- rprice

It's where you rented your first Jarmusch film. It's where you got endlessly checkmated at Chess Club. It's where you ate a Rhodehamel "concept waffle" and drank a Stoner (not telling; order it for yourself). It's where you saw noisy bands like SSLOTS or performance art like Le Busboy. It's where you saw Rhodehamel's first Orlando art show, "Coathanger Stories." It's where you dressed up as Margot Tenenbaum and danced under a giant cardboard jaguar shark hanging from the ceiling.

Thomas Thorspecken finds beauty in the mundane - Visual & Fine Arts - Orlando Weekly

Thu, 05/01/2014 - 13:23 -- rprice

“I bought my desk, bought the same computer I was working on at Disney, and spent several years at home teaching myself computer animation,” Thor says. “After several years alone I just couldn’t take it, staring at that computer screen, so I got out and started sketching.” That led to his next major creative phase, which launched in 2009 with his project to publish a sketch of Orlando on his AnalogArtistDigitalWorld.com blog every day for the whole year.

Orlando Mini Maker Faire - Arts & Culture - Orlando Weekly

Wed, 09/05/2012 - 05:38 -- rprice

innovation is not to be collected or consumed – it's to be explored. These are the types whose first instinct after using new technology is to take it apart, driven by a compulsion and motivated by sincere curiosity to find out: How. Does. It. Work. These are the makers. And they're assembling their latest toys and technologies to showcase at Orlando's first-ever Mini Maker Faire.

Donation brings hydroponic gardening to women's shelter - News & Features - Orlando Weekly

Mon, 07/30/2012 - 09:44 -- rprice

“vertical aqua gardens,” and they were donated to the shelter by local businesswoman Barrie Freeman and her new venture, Hi-Rise Harvest. The idea is to use these curious structures to educate the facility's residents, many of whom have little experience with fresh produce, much less gardening, on the value of better diets and modern techniques for growing. The seven units, each of which can produce hundreds of pounds of veggies in a typical season while taking up only a couple of square feet of space, were installed in March.
